Fog is both transient and downright creepy. As you move through the fog objects and creatures materialize out of the gray right before you. That's particularly terrifying when you're driving home at 2 AM and everything is quiet, dark, and still and it's just miles of fog and nothing else. Most of the time my only real concern is the bracing thought that a deer might decide to pop out of the treeline.
Sometimes when I'm feeling particularly edgy I can practically convince myself that if I drive too slowly or if, for any reason, I had to pull off the side of the road, I'm welcoming something bad into my life. Combine my love of the paranormal and true crime stories and I have a recipe for the jitters.
I'm not alone in thinking fog is creepy and mysterious. I'm also not alone in thinking that fog creates a liminal space, a linkage from one reality to another, and that in that space things bleed together. And then what's creepier than that?
